New Jersey Governor Chris Christie says that he decided to have weight loss surgery for his family. In an interview with Brian Williams of NBC News, the Governor said “Last fall, I was turning 50 and it really was a moment of reflection for me.”
Christie who is favored by many in the middle to be the next Republican Candidate for President, was often the butt of late night jokes. However, the governor insisted that his decision to take control of his health was a personal one. He stated “And so I really just felt like for Mary Pat and for the kids that I needed to take a more significant step to try to get my weight under control, so that I could have a really active next half of my life.”
Chris Christie had his surgery this past February. But before the procedure, he consulted with a pioneer in weight loss surgery, Dr. George Fielding of New York University.
He asked Dr. Fielding "Well, do I really think I need this?’ The doctor replied ‘If you came in here with cancer and I told you that I had a 40-minute surgery that'd give you a 90 percent chance of cure, would you sign up? The Governor said ‘Yeah, I would.’ And Dr. Fielding said, ‘Well, then why wouldn't you do that to cure obesity?’
Governor Christie also stated that prior to his surgery, he also talked to New York Jets coach Rex Ryan about his experience with Lap Band Surgery. The New Jersey Governor said that one of the biggest adjustments for him is not feeling hungry.
I think it's wonderful That Governor Chris Christie took control and did something that will most definitely improve his quality of life. Good for him.
