Hundreds attend the funeral of Sandra Bland, an African American woman who was found dead in a Texas jail cell after being arrested following a minor traffic violation. Sandra Bland's funeral service was held at the DuPage African Methodist Episcopal Church in Lisle, Illinois.
On July 10th, the young woman was pulled over on a small road just northwest of Houston, Texas, by white Texas state trooper, Brian T. Encinia, She was stopped for failing to signal a lane change. The Trooper initially stated that he was going to give Ms. Bland a warning. Unfortunately that's not what happened.
From the Dash-Cam Video, it was clear to see that Ms. Bland was irritated with the stop and did express her feelings to Mr. Encinia. He asked Ms. Bland to put her cigarette out. She refused and he ordered her to get out of the car. Officer Encinia threatened to light Ms. Bland up with his taser is she did not comply. Bland was taken into custody and charged with assaulting an officer. Her bail was set at $5,000.00. Three days later on July 13th, she was found hanging in her jail cell with a plastic trash bag around her neck.
The medical examiner determined that Ms. Bland's death was a suicide. However, her family believes that foul play was involved. They insist she had good things happening in her life including the fact that she was looking forward to starting a new job. Ms. Bland told the jailer that she tried to commit suicide in 2014. Ms. Bland was a well know activist who was very involved with "Black Lives Matter."
