In November of 1997, Elle Magazine did something out of the box. They choes Sudanese model Alek Wek to be on the cover. At the time, a move like that was considered risky. A dark skinned African girl on the cover of a major fashion magazine. That was unheard of.
I remember when the magazine went on sale. I was working in Downtown Los Angeles. I remember seeing the magazine all over the news stands. Let's just say as people walked by the stands, I heard some of them make some not so nice remarks pertaining to her dark skin tone.
I who at that time bought every fashion magazine that was to be sold, can tell you there was some controversy with her being featured on the cover.
We have come a ways since then, but we still have a lot further to go. So Happy 36 Birthday to beautiful Alek Wek. Thank you for giving dark chocolate girs someone to look up to.
